There are not too many horror films as of late with a cult sense of humor, in jokes, buckets of gore… that are also done with an intelligent edge. However, fasten your seatbelts because I rented Chop recently.

Chop was written by Adam Minarovich who wrote another classic from 2002 called Ankle Biters. And it was directed by Troma alum Trent Haaga. This being the case I snatched it up without even reading up much on the film. I knew I was going to like it.

Here is the plot as stated at imdb.com: Lance Reed is forced by a psychotic stranger to confront his duplicitous past. Seeking retribution for a crime, the man forces Lance to reveal his inner most secrets by systematically removing his limbs.

Sounds pretty grimm eh? Sounds like yet another torture porn flick doesn’t it? Nope, this is a horror comedy that pokes some fun at that subgenre.

The flick is relentless in the sense that the story wastes no time getting started and it never lags in the middle as so many horror films do. It keeps you guessing for quite a while as well. I thought I had it figured out pretty quickly only to have the characters in the film make jokes at my expense. When I watch a flick like this with other people where there seems to be a “mystery” theme to it; we all often shout out what we think is going on, what we individually think the mystery is. Shortly after I made my prediction, the stranger (played by Timothy Muskatell) tells Lance (played by Will Keenan) that my prediction is completely wrong. I know that’s vague but I don’t want to give it away.

Chop is a fun movie with genuine laughs, the acting is better than you might expect, a lotta gore and the plot works. I highly recommend it!
