Episode 10, BITCH!

Episode 10 of Acid Pop Cult looses Roxy, but finds a very drunk Jeremy and sober Lee joined by Parker and Frisbie of Pool Party Radio. Jeremy also has a special contest winner in studio serving as his assistant/bar tender. The boys talk pop cult news before jumping into a round of Pop Cult trivia, a first for the show. Episode 5: TROMA Retrospective Featuring Brian Myers (Part 1), Chop & The Muppets Review

There are not too many horror films as of late with a cult sense of humor, in jokes, buckets of gore… that are also done with an intelligent edge. However, fasten your seatbelts because I rented Chop recently.

Chop was written by Adam Minarovich who wrote another classic from 2002 called Ankle Biters. And it was directed by Troma alum Trent Haaga. This being the case I snatched it up without even reading up much on the film. I knew I was going to like it.

Here is the plot as stated at imdb.com: Lance Reed is forced by a psychotic stranger to confront his duplicitous past. Seeking retribution for a crime, the man forces Lance to reveal his inner most secrets by systematically removing his limbs.

Sounds pretty grimm eh? Sounds like yet another torture porn flick doesn’t it? Nope, this is a horror comedy that pokes some fun at that subgenre.

The flick is relentless in the sense that the story wastes no time getting started and it never lags in the middle as so many horror films do. It keeps you guessing for quite a while as well. I thought I had it figured out pretty quickly only to have the characters in the film make jokes at my expense. When I watch a flick like this with other people where there seems to be a “mystery” theme to it; we all often shout out what we think is going on, what we individually think the mystery is. Shortly after I made my prediction, the stranger (played by Timothy Muskatell) tells Lance (played by Will Keenan) that my prediction is completely wrong. I know that’s vague but I don’t want to give it away.

Chop is a fun movie with genuine laughs, the acting is better than you might expect, a lotta gore and the plot works. I highly recommend it!

Shepis also fills us in on what she has been keeping herself busy with and gives us the lowdown on what we might expect from her hubby, Sean Tretta. Jeremy issues a public apology to Parker and thanks him for the 24/7 tech support.

Adam Rifkin’s “Wadzilla” was a fun tip of the hat to the atomic age monster movies of the 1950s. Rifkin gives us the tale of what would happen if you encountered an ever growing sperm monster. The Chiodo Brothers kicked some serious ass with the design of the monster. Rifkin’s script is pretty funny and the cast, lead by Rifkin, execute the jokes flawlessly. It’s always a pleasure to see Ray Wise in any type of role and his performance as Dr. Weems was the highlight of the segment for me.

Tim Sullivan’s “I Was a Teenage Werebear” is a cute homage to the bikini musicals of the 1960s. The FX are very cheesy (on purpose) and the musical numbers are catchy. I’m sure Sullivan had a blast working on such a goofy flick. Sullivan’s go to girl, Lin Shaye has a fun role in the flick as the gypsy who gives you the info that you already know.

Adam Green’s “Diary of Anne Frankenstein”  was a hoot! Set in WWII though Hitler, played by Joel David Moore, is still convinced that it is WWI.  Ol’ Adolf is up to his crazy antics and has hatched a diabolical scheme to create the perfect soldier. Of course the monster is played by Kane Hodder, this is an Adam Green flick after all… I still believe Hodder played the chair lift in Frozen, but I digress. Where was I?? Oh yeah, Kane… Hitler’s monster Meshugannah looks fantastic! Robert Pendergraft created a great design that looked like something you would have seen on the back lot at Universal. Green’s script is hilarious. Joel David Moore and Kristina Klebe are adorable together. All I can say is keep an eye out for the puppies.

Joe Lynch directed The opening, wrap around, and last segment, “Zom-B-Movie ” All of which have a very old school punk rock feel. The segments are gore filled and shoot 100cc’s of adrenaline straight into your anus cavity. Lynch got his segment (and wrap around) perfect, a little tight, but he had to get a lot in the film, yet allow enough time for the other films to play out in a respectful time frame.

All in all, “CHILLERAMA” is a hell of a good time! If you have a chance to catch a screening during any stop on the roadshow, I suggest you make it A.S.A. Fah’kin P!

Here is the premise: An unemployed alcoholic Native American Indian lives on a trailer park with his wife and two children. Convinced that he has nothing to offer this world, he agrees to be tortured to death by a gang of rednecks in return for $50,000. The film stars Johnny Depp and is also one of Marlon Brando’s last films. Look for an Iggy Pop cameo too.

As the myth goes, it did very well at the Cannes Film Festival but Johnny Depp was insulted so badly by the American critics; that he chose to never release it in the US. This is not an action packed Hollywood crapfest type of movie, it’s a “character” study in my opinion. For me that means a lot of time is spent getting to know these characters, listening to dialogue, getting intimate with them, and watching them evolve to the finale. The film forces you to reflect on several moral issues, whether you want to or not.
Pretty dark eh? It is. The film is about desperation and it’s bleakness will leave you very disturbed for a long time after. I’ve read other reviews that claim that as the ending credits roll by you find yourself sitting in complete shock, and I believe that is true. It almost hurts to watch it and it feels very realistic. A film that can evoke that much emotion is more than just mere entertainment. I don’t feel American movie critics understood that.

Jeremy here. I just wanted to say thanks for dropping by this brand new awesomeness. Special shout out to Roxy for setting up this fine looking spot for us to bitch about everything pop. Good looking out, kid.  Roxy, Chris and I are looking forward to pleasuring your ear holes with a podcast soon. When Chris cries at night for his binky the only thing that calms him down is the thought of us silly fan boys and gal talking to the masses about how much we hate, love to hate, and hate to love pop culture. Roxy sometimes doesn’t leave her cave in the Middle East for months on end. I figure she is too busy watching old Fred Olen Ray flicks. We hope to help her with that issue by teaching her that not everyone in the world sucks as much as Jim Wynorski’s chocolate covered skinamax features. I for one know that my chronic anxiety will only keep me tied to my mothers hip for the rest of my life. Chris and Roxy feel that this is not healthy and the podcast (coming soon) will help me with my abandonment issues. Maybe if my mother would stop breast feeding me I wouldn’t be so afraid of starvation on my trip to the mall.

Most mainstream film reviewers treat horror films with disregard.  The main audience is usually considered the “teenage” crowd, although many adults including women enjoy them too! Horror Movies are a very misunderstood genre: rarely winning awards or receiving critical praise.  Yet many horror films have become groundbreaking pieces of pop culture that are as entwined in our society as Stars Wars or the Wizard of Oz is.  Horror movies have created their own icons, their own celebrities, and their own mythologies.

Those of us who enjoy riding the roller coaster at any amusement park can probably understand the “thrill” that a horror film delivers to its audience.  The same things that attract us to a “funhouse” at a carnival – can lead us into movie theatres.  The sense of experiencing “terror” in a safe environment can be extremely enticing.  At the end of a really creepy horror film we can say we have glimpsed into darkness, and survived.

Horror films are not designed to be taken so seriously; they are simply another genre of entertainment in “movie land”. Horror Movies tell the audience about fantasies and ideologies rather than social realities; although reality may often inspire the fantasy.  Horror has its own niche, and market that has always existed, and isn’t going away anytime soon.
